JOSEPH GREGORY ROSSANO

Joseph Rossano is a multidisciplinary artist, environmentalist, and Vision Fly Fishing ambassador whose work explores natural history, conservation, and the relationship between people and wildlife. Based in Washington State, USA, his art has been exhibited internationally, including at the United Nations Climate Change Conference and numerous museums and institutional collections.

A passionate fly angler since 1972, Rossano helped pioneer the development of double-handed rods, Skagit-style steelhead flies, and multi-density fly lines in the Pacific Northwest. His flies, photography, and writing have been featured in numerous books and publications, making him a respected figure in both the art and fly-fishing communities.

What are your biggest passions in fly fishing? "My passion is salmon and the places in which we find them. I fish for both Atlantic  and Pacific salmon and steelhead, employing the sunk line and swung fly (on multi-density lines), as well as the floating line, with swung and dead-drift presentations."

Vision gear that you can't live without? "The Vision team of designers is always bringing cutting-edge and innovative products to market. I love older products like the Ikon and Sub-Zero waders, Ace shooting heads, and Tank reels. From the new lineup, I'm most fond of the Scout waders, the XO III 13'6 #8 double hander, and the Hybrid heads.   "

What are your top 3 flies?  "The Precocious Smolt, the Muddler Minnow, and the Lady Atherton."

What is your wildest fishing memory? " One of my wildest fishing memories comes from my twenties while chasing steelhead on the Babine River. I hooked a giant fish in the tailout of a pool above a long, fast chute and, lacking the experience to turn it upstream, watched it head straight downstream. Determined not to lose it, I jumped in after it, swimming through the chute and scrambling over rocks and gravel bars to keep up. Nearly half a mile from where we first connected, I finally worked the fish into a back eddy and brought it within a few feet. As it rolled on its side, I thought the battle was won. Then it looked at me, righted itself, and the hook fell free. I lost the fish but gained a memory I'll never forget."
